Precious Pieces of history?

Mon Jul 7, 2008, 3:58 AM
Over the following year and a half I have to submit a thesis and a body of work to obtain my Btech in jewellery...obviously its not a super acedemic thesis but is loosely based on one. We had to choose a topic that 'turned us on' sounds lame but writting about something for 2 years one has to be pretty into the subject otherwise it gonna be boring for me and the readers. Anyway...
My subject matter is the 'Heirloom' how has this culture if preserving an object and passing it down from generation upon generation, has this tradition changed, declined, ect.
Im investigating what change has occurred and if there is a decline why has this happened?
I know most of you out there have had something given to you from a grandparent or parent, i want to know what is is and how it makes you feel. Do you care about it, cherish and treasure that small slice of history or does it bore you?
Will you pass it down again to your children?
So if any of you are reading this and have an interesting opinion or story to go with this subject please let me know about it, because from my observation my generation of 20 somethings cant be bothered about past history, if they get a ring from their mother they will get the stone taken out of it and the metal melted down to make something modern and pretty...

On the one hand that whole process makes me angry but on the other I suppose its a form of recycling (which is a good thing in todays world)...anyway please share your thoughts, also note that im not just referring to an heirloom as a piece of jewellery, it can be anything from photograph to a story.
